Year 9 Drama Students Shine in Performance with the Birmingham Hippodrome

Thorns Collegiate Academy is celebrating the exceptional talent of its year nine drama students, who recently took to the stage at the Patrick Studio, Birmingham Hippodrome. The students delivered a captivating performance inspired by the upcoming production of &Juliet – a vibrant, modern reimagining of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

The project, led by the Hippodrome’s learning artist Ashlee Elizabeth-Lolo, offered students the opportunity to explore the themes of &Juliet and develop their own creative response. Over several months, they worked collaboratively to craft an original piece of theatre, reflecting both their understanding of the play’s message and their personal interpretations.

After weeks of preparation, including a full technical and dress rehearsal, students performed their piece in front of a packed audience of parents and guests. Their performance was a resounding success, showcasing their acting talents, creativity, and growing confidence on stage.

For many students, it was a particularly meaningful milestone with some performing on stage for the very first time, and for all involved, the event was a proud and emotional moment. It reflected the dedication, courage, and passion of the performers and the staff who supported them throughout the journey.

Nikki Jones, Principal at Thorns Collegiate Academy, commented: “We are incredibly proud of our drama students and the professionalism they’ve shown throughout this project. Their performance is a testament to their talent, hard work and commitment and they have truly done themselves and the Academy proud.

At Thorns, we see the creative arts as essential in helping develop students’ confidence, creativity and transferable skills that will benefit them far beyond the classroom. Our partnership with the Birmingham Hippodrome offers unique, invaluable opportunities for our students to experience live theatre and engage with the wider arts community. These enriching experiences help our young people grow both academically and personally.”

As part of the continuing collaboration with the Hippodrome, students will also have the opportunity to attend a live performance of &Juliet, further deepening their connection to the world of theatre and the creative arts.

Thorns Collegiate Academy is committed to nurturing creativity alongside academic excellence, and the success of this latest project stands as a shining example of the school’s dedication to developing the talents and aspirations of all its students.
