Former Thorns Collegiate Academy student Mia returned with her band from South & City College Birmingham to deliver an inspirational session for year 9 and 10 students.
The band shared their experiences and insights of studying at college and offered insights into the wide range of carers available in the music industry, from performers and managers to sound engineers and marketers. Students were engaged by stories of young musicians already making their mark and gained practical advice for pursuing creative careers.
Mia also highlighted the impact of funding cuts on grassroot artists, emphasising the importance of supporting emerging talent in schools and communities.
“It was amazing to come back and share my journey,” Mia said. “I hope our session encourages students to explore their creativity and know that opportunities are out there is you work for them.”
School Principal Nikki Jones added: “Hearing from former students like Mia is invaluable. It shows learners what is possible after school, inspires them to pursue their passions, and helps them understand the real-world challenges and opportunities in their chosen fields. While we do our utmost to provide a variety of careers guidance and opportunities, visits from professionals, including our alumni, offer something extra. They bring real-world experience to the classroom and show students what they can achieve in a way that lessons alone cannot.”
The visit followed the Academy’s recent launch of their new alumni network with UK social mobility charity Future First. The initiative connects former students, keeping them informed about school news, open events and job opportunities, while enabling them to contribute to the Academy’s careers programme and support current students.
The network builds on the success of the Academy’s Thorns alumni Facebook page, which has attracted over 1,000 former students. Through Future First, alumni can share their career journeys both online and in person, offering guidance and inspiration to the next generation.
