Thorns Collegiate Academy builds on financial education success with HSBC award

Thorns Collegiate Academy in Brierley Hill has once again been awarded the HSBC Smart Money Award, following its initial recognition in 2023.

Presented by HSBC UK, the award recognises schools where students have engaged with the bank’s financial education programme and demonstrated strong money management skills.

At Thorns, financial literacy is delivered in line with the national curriculum and reinforced through workshops, guest speakers and practical activities. Students gain hands-on experience with budgeting, distinguishing between needs and wants, and safeguarding personal and financial information, helping them make informed decisions about money.

HSBC UK’s wider education programme offers Smart Money sessions for children and young people aged four to 19, delivered by staff and volunteers nationwide. Its Smart Money Certificate programme for 14- to 19-year-olds covers core principals including budgeting, interest calculations and value assessments, giving students practical skills they can apply in everyday life.

Principal Nikki Jones said: “Financial education is not an optional extra, it’s a fundamental life skill. Many of our students will soon be making important decisions about bank accounts, budgeting, employment and further study. It’s essential that they understand how money works and feel confident managing it.

“We want our students to leave Thorns not only with strong academic outcomes, but with the knowledge and judgement to make informed financial choices. This award recognises the hard work of our staff in embedding those skills into everyday learning and preparing our students for life beyond school.”

The renewed recognition reinforces the Academy’s commitment to equipping students with the practical skills and understanding they need to navigate financial decisions successfully.
