Thorns celebrates best results in 5 years

Thorns Community College celebrated some of the school’s best results in five years, welcoming their Year 11 back to congratulate them on their successes in GCSE examinations. Overall, GCSE results have risen significantly since last year. Principal Mr Manny Kelay said “We are a truly comprehensive school, where we help every student to make a future for themselves. As in every other year, all of our students are set to move to their post-16 choices. We wish them well.” The school has achieved some of the strongest English and Science results in their history, with over 60% of students attaining at least a Grade C or the new Grade 4 equivalent. The creative subjects have also produced some superb performances – 50% of Dance students this year achieved a Distinction or a Distinction*, which is the highest possible grade.

The school is celebrating some truly outstanding individual performances. Emily Baker was awarded the top possible grade in 8 of her 13 subjects, achieving an A grade in all of the others. Callum Daunter achieved 9 grades above A, including Grade 8 in Maths and English Literature, and a Grade 9 in English Language. The new Grade 9, equivalent to the upper half of the old A*, was achieved by several students, including Natasha Davies who achieved a 9 in both English Language and English Literature.

The new, tougher GCSEs have not deterred students from achieving significant results: Vice Principal Gary Baker thanked the wider community for their part in the success of the students: “It is the consistent effort of our students, along with the support of our parents and our tireless teachers who have allowed us to achieve such excellent performances among our results”.

Student Emily Baker said after opening her results “I had hoped to get Grade 8s – and I got 9s! I’m going to Old Swinford Hospital to study A Levels in Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Further Maths.”

Justin Haynes-Walker was also pleased with his results “Very pleased. I’m most happy with my English because it was the subject I put the most work into, and against the odds, I passed.”

Student Moumina Hussain is looking forward to her future; ‘I’m very happy. I hope my results will allow me to go where I want to go” while Chloe Bridgwater was overjoyed with her individual results; ‘I’d never got a 7 in English before. Now to do my A levels at Dudley College.’ As Thorns moves into its new era as Thorns Collegiate Academy from 1st September 2017, all of the staff wish Year 11 well and anticipate moving into even further success over the coming year.
